One of my first blog posts on this website was regarding my William Carey years back in 2007-2009. What I forgot to mention was what type of camera I was using at the time. It was one of those Olympus point-and-shoot cameras with the “xD” card (Olympus’ version of the SD card, but a slightly altered shape). The camera was small for a point-and-shoot at that time.
Anyhow, I was introuced to trying photography in a required photography class in 2008. While all I had at the time was the Olympus point-and-shoot, some of my best and timeless images I’ve ever taken was from that very camera.
We’ll start with a practice shot of my family dog at the time, Chandler; he was a Jack Russell Terrier my family had for 14 years altogether from 2004-2018, and this particular picture of him was laying on my bed in 2008.
At an old pier in Biloxi, Mississippi, I found a crow sitting on top of a set of lights and managed to nab a shot of it looking into the distance. “The Crow” was entered into the 2008 Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition Exhibit.
The next image was one I took in class practicing techniques I dub “Bottles;” a classmate had their water jug with a purse in the background next to my Sprite bottle. Sometimes I still wonder how myself how I came across taking a good photo like that in the middle of class that day, but it won 1st place in Photography at the WCU Traditions Exhibit in 2008.
“The Day Before She Died” is one of the last images taken of the USS Camille Ship that stood on Highway 90 in Gulfport, Mississippi before it was torn down because of excessive damages from Hurricane Katrina.
Lastly, I continued my photography practice that semester and got a good image of a seagull on the Biloxi Beach.
